The Institution

The Obra Social e Cultural Sílvia Cardoso

Founded in 1921 and located in the municipality of Paços de Ferreira, Obra Social and Cultural Sílvia Cardoso plays an important role in the help of the most needed population of Paços de Ferreira and nearby. The services rendered by the OSCSC extend from such areas as education, child care, and the rehabilitation and aid to the person with disabilities. OSCSC gives thus an important contribute to the well-being and development of our local community.

In March 1921, OSCSC was formally opened as Asilo Creche de St. António, a private intern school for underprivileged young women. By this time the school also provided meals to the sometimes hungry and needed population that came to its doors.

Later, in 1970, and keeping its social function, The Asilo Creche de St. António gains the special license required to open the first secondary school in Paços de Ferreira. Thanks to this Institution many people had the chance to obtain further studies in a time when living standards and transportation conditions did not allow people to go to the major cities and continue their education. With no doubt many of today's leading figures in Paços de Ferreira public life and business are among these earlier students.

In 1972, the Externato Sílvia Cardoso (has it was named) offers its facilities temporarily to the first public secondary school in Paços de Ferreira, until such time as its own installations were ready to function. In 1980, the building returns to the Institution, and it's readapted has a kindergarten.
"Always searching to understand and support the needs of the local population, specifically, of those less fortunate, Obra Social and Cultural Sílvia Cardoso plays indeed an important civic mission, in the tradition of its founder D. Sílvia Cardoso."
In 1982, about the time of the celebration of the centennial of its founder D. Sílvia Cardoso, new contacts and protocols were established in order to create a special education area that finally started operating in 1985.

From this time on, the Asilo Creche de St. António changes its official status and name to Obra Social and Cultural Sílvia Cardoso.

Looking Towards the future: A live Institution

Nowadays OSCSC is aimed at being a modern and dynamic Institution. It establishes international contacts, and works with several trans-national partners. This effort is sustained by a constant concern in using the most modern and updated information technologies. We have fully computerized all our accounting and management work and we commonly use e-mail and started our very own internet web site.

We seek to publicize our image by using all media available to us. At this time we are working in information and Public Relations campaigns, as a means to better inform the community, our students, their families and our institutional partners. Mobilizing the business community is also a key aspect in all our communications, in order to fight against a sometimes negative and indulgent view of the disabled person that stands between this people and their chance to get rehabilitated and find work.

Our modernity is also displayed in our belief in Integrated Teaching. In our kindergarten level and playground children carrying disabilities and children who do not play and interact with each other. This practice we and many other psychologists believe to be highly pedagogical, since both children benefit from this interaction. Children who do not carry disabilities learn of values such as tolerance and understanding for the special needs of others. Children carrying disabilities get a better sense of themselves, a positive self-image, and a chance, according to the nature and degree of their deficiency, to more easily acquire and develop social, verbal and cognitive abilities.

Always searching to understand and support the needs of the local population, in particular, of those less fortunate, Obra Social and Cultural Sílvia Cardoso plays indeed an important civic mission, in the tradition of its founder D.ª Sílvia Cardoso.
